June 14th, 2010

You want the best for your baby, and rightly so.  You check the label to see whats iin the food, make sure the clothes they wear dont smell, buy deoderant so THEY dont smell.  Buying a crib is no less crucial.  You want the manufacturer to have a quality product with rigorous safety guidelines during its making.
There are 5 basic types of cribs to choose, coming in all shapes and sizes just like you and your baby.
* Regular Crib is the most commonly used with either a single or double-drop side.
*Canopy Crib has corner posts that allow for metal frames to be attached and fabric set as a canopy for a classic, elegent look.
*Convertible Crib is similar to hyda beds in that it serves multiple functions.  This makes it very economical and highly recommended.  It can transform from a regular crib to a toddler bed or even into a full size bed.
*Round Crib is quite new, yet is becoming quite popular.  The name is not very original as its round in shape and  they feature a single drop side.
*Portable Crib is great for traveling and may be carried anywhere.  You do lose some size all around when choosing these beds in order to make up for the convenience.

Aside from the crib type, there are still several factors you should consider when choosing the best crib for your newborn such as design, features, materials used and size.

* The standard measurement of a crib mattress is 51 3/4 inches by 27 1/4 inches.  Check that the crib you like at least meets this criteria.  Some manufacturers have specially made mattresses that are required to match the corresponding cribs.
* Be sure and ask what all the different features are of each crib you consider.  Some can be great while others may not be for your specific home and needs.  Here is a sample list of things to look at: adjustable height, cradles, safety gates, rolling casters, hardwood, plastics, metals and fabric.
* Cribs have different features such as adjustable height, rolling casters, teething rail, wheel, cradles, safety gates and more. When buying cribs for your babies you should know all these features; don’t hesitate to ask.
* Thoroughly test each feature on the cribs to ensure they do indeed meet the needs of your home and life.  A dropside that doesnt support significant weight is a risk you shouldnt be taking outside of the store.
