Choosing Newborn Baby Clothes

June 21st, 2010

There is a lot to do and plan for with a newborn baby.  Whether it be the first or later child there is much excitement and nervousness.  Theres the nursery to be prepared, so buying furniture, bedding, toys, making the walls look nice.  Then youve got what help will be needed, and of course buying enough newborn baby clothes.

With this little guide we can at least ease some of the tension and lift a load for you.  As far as clothes are concerned there are tons of places to purchase them.  Clothes shopping in general has really expanded in the last 30 years and we have many more options to do our purchases at.  There are general stores like walmart that have baby sections and then there are specialty stores such as Babies r Us for one stop shopping.  The internet of course is wonderful for planning everything from the comforts of your own home and have it all delivered directly to you.

So what basic baby clothes are essential to have on hand?  How many do you need of each?  Boy or girl there is no specific number of each garment to have on hand.  Each child will be different, more or less messy than another.  A good recommendation would be to have clothes for a minimum day or two.  This will help ensure you dont have to do laundry

Whether you are buying baby boy clothes or baby girl clothes there is no specified number of each garment that is essential. It is important to have enough of the basic baby clothes for a day or two so that you don’t have to be constantly worrying about having to do the laundry every day.

If you know nothing about babies then its good to know that they go through a surprising number of clothes in the course of a single day.  Ease of use then is the key to purchasing clothes in quantity.  Heres a list of some different types to consider depending on your location and needs.

*5-10 plain snapsuits for underneath pants and tops or fancier ones as outerwear in warmer weather.
* For the first few weeks keep 5-10 sleeper suits on hand during the day.
* Baby gowns are great for night time diaper changes and you’ll get along great with 4-5 of them.
* Babies are notorious for drooling and spitting so get 5-10 bibs to keep the rest of the outfit clean.
* This one is more for your clothes than the baby, but get a lot of burp clothes so you can do more than one burp session in a day.
* Keep your kids feet warm with socks, 5 or so pairs.
* Two hats is plenty for trips outside.
* One baby coat for cold weather is a must, make sure it matches the weather and season in your area.
* Baby towels are excellent for drying your baby without drowning them in excess cloth.  two or three is good.
*  If your worried about scratches on the baby get some mittens for them, at least two pairs.

Due to the differences in babies habits these numbers you may find to be to much or not enough so use this as a guide in your purchasing decisions. The number of times you need to change your precious one may drastically affect the overall amount you need to purchase.
